2. You Are Downsizing and Have Not Decided Yet
Moving from a house to an apartment usually means some furniture has no home. Storing it for a defined period while you work out what your new space actually needs is reasonable. Storing it indefinitely because deciding is hard is how people end up paying for years.

3. You Are Staging or Selling
Emptying a house to show it well is a real use case with a natural end date attached. It is usually a smaller unit than people expect, because you are removing the excess rather than the whole household.
4. You Are Between Cities
Relocating for work before the family follows, or taking a temporary posting, means storing the bulk while you live light. This is planned storage, and it tends to work well because the timeline is known from the start.
When Storage Is the Wrong Answer
Be honest about these:
- You are storing things you will not use again. Two years of storage frequently exceeds what the contents would cost to replace. Do the arithmetic before you sign, not afterwards.
- You are avoiding a decision. A unit is a very expensive way to postpone a sorting afternoon.
- The gap is two days. Ask your movers to hold the load instead. It is usually simpler and cheaper.

These are genuinely different products and the right one depends on one question: do you need to get into your things?
Choose Storage Handled by Your Movers When
- The gap is short, from a few days to a few weeks.
- You do not need access during it.
- You would rather your belongings were handled twice than four times.
This matters more than people realise. If you rent your own unit, the crew unloads into it, and later someone loads it back out. That is two extra handlings of every item. Choose Your Own Unit When
- The gap runs for months.
- You need to retrieve things, seasonally or regularly.
- You are storing a portion of the household long term rather than all of it briefly.
Packing for Storage Is Not Packing for a Truck
A truck load lasts hours. A storage load lasts months, and the difference shows up in what survives.
- Uniform boxes. Same sizes stack to the ceiling and let you rent one size smaller. Mismatched boxes waste a third of the vertical space.
- Nothing directly on the concrete. Pallets or a layer of boards. Concrete draws moisture, and this is Oregon.
- No plastic wrap against wood. It traps moisture against the finish. Moving blankets and breathable padding instead.
- Disassemble what comes apart. Bed frames, tables and shelving take a fraction of the space flat, and it drops your unit size.
- Label by contents, not by room. You will be opening these in a different house, months later, with no memory of the old floor plan.
- Load in reverse order of need. Anything you might want before the move-in date goes by the door.
- Nothing perishable, flammable or battery powered. Most facilities prohibit these outright, and the ones that do not should.

Climate Control in the Portland Climate
